๐ Life Insurance’s Hidden Challenge: 1 in 3 Agents Quit Every Year ๐
One of the major channels of distribution in Life insurance sector is still Agents ,despite a large number of new channels of Distribution. A lot of debate is happening on the compensation of Agents. Another side of the debate should be on the fact that there is a high degree of attrition. One-third of salesforce has walked out every year. This is a crisis which requires a rethink. I am just sharing some facts and issues.
๐ถ Key Stats (Industry-wide)
▪️ Agency share of first-year premiums: ↓ from 58.1% (FY21) to 50.9% (FY24).
▪️ Average agent productivity: Flat at ~₹2.7–2.8 lakh.
▪️ Attrition: Up from 18.5% (FY21) to 31.2% (FY25).
▪️ 5-year average attrition: 27% → 1 in 3 agents exit every year.
๐ถ Why it matters:
▪️ Constant rebuilding of workforce.
▪️ Recruitment gains neutralized by exits.
▪️ Higher costs, stagnant productivity.
๐ถ The Way Forward
▪️ Recruit for quality over volume.
▪️ Train for advisory & digital skills.
▪️ Reimagine compensation (Commission ,trail commissions, quality of book compensation).
▪️ Build career paths & mentoring systems.
▪️ Benchmark low-attrition players.
๐ Sustainable growth will not come from adding more agents — but from retaining and empowering them.
๐ถ Any thoughts?
